Press Release: Patented technology to create and trade environmental value of "daytime charging" EV and V2G time-shifting
April 1, 2023
Patent Acquired for Innovative Carbon Accounting Methodology andAI-technology to Create and Trade as NFT Environmental Value of "Daytime Charging" EVs and V2G Time Shift(Patent No. 7246659)
D-Sharing Co., Tokyo based Climate-tech Start-up (CEO: Naoki Sakai) has recently acquired a patent for an innovative methodology & technology to create and trade as NFT environmental value of Day-Time Charging of electric vehicles (EVs) at times when the ratio of renewable energy in the power grid is high, and V2G (Note 1) and V2H (Note 2), which charge EVs during the day and discharge them at night. (Note 1) and V2G (Note 2) and V2H (Note 3), and has been granted a basic patent (Patent No. 7246659) for the technology to quantitatively calculate, evaluate, and trade the CO2 reduction value of time-shifting in comparison of hourly carbon intensity.

EVs are sonsidered to emit less CO2 than gasoline-powered vehicles and are expected to make a significant contribution to the realization of a decarbonized society. While the CO2 emissions from gasoline combustion per kilometer driven by a gasoline vehicle are approximately 160 g, the CO2 emissions from electricity consumption per kilometer driven by an EV can be significantly reduced to 50 to 100 g (Note 4).

However, electricity is generally unstorable, and the CO2 emissions associated with electricity consumption (power system average) can be more than twice as large during the day on sunny days when many solar power generators are in operation, and at night when many coal-fired thermal power generators are in operation.
For this reason, the CO2 emissions per kilometer of EV travel can also be more than twice as large when recharging during the daytime on sunny days and at night. Therefore, recharging during the daytime on sunny days, when the ratio of renewable energy is as high as possible, will further increase the eco-friendliness of EV use and create a lot of environmental value (Note 5).
(Note 5) The patented technology will make it possible to precisely measure and evaluate the environmental value created by the time shift of "Day-Time-Charging" in addition to the environmental value of gasoline vehicles, and to hold this information as NFT or trade it with a third party.
In addition, EVs are expected to spread widely in Japan and abroad in the future. If a large number of EV users across the country start recharging their vehicles at the same time, say from 5 to 6 p.m., the supply and demand of electricity may become tight, causing electricity rates to soar and increasing the risk of power outages.
Therefore, in order to realize both stabilization of electricity supply and demand and decarbonization of the power system, we will properly evaluate the environmental value created by time-shifting, which has been buried until now, and promote efforts to popularize "Day-Time Charging".
In the future, CO2 emissions in all aspects of civic and industrial activities must be measured, evaluated, and reduced to achieve net-zero emissions, and decarbon accounting is attracting attention as a new business. Therefore, using this patented technology, we will collaborate with international organizations and overseas startups to disseminate to the world as an international standard originating in Japan, a method to more fairly measure, analyze, evaluate, and trade CO2 emissions and reductions from electricity consumption, renewable energy, and low-carbon power generation in all aspects of daily life and industry using digital technology (Note 6). We will work with international organizations and overseas startups to disseminate this method as an international standard originating in Japan (Note 6).
(Note 1) V2G (Vehicle to Grid): A system in which EVs are regarded as moving storage batteries, and EVs are recharged and the stored power is discharged and supplied to power network systems.
(Note 2) V2H (Vehicle to Home): Similar to V2G, this system recharges EVs, discharges the stored electricity, and uses it at home. This system can also be used as emergency electricity in times of disaster.
(Note 3) This patent is the same as the previously announced patent related to transition finance. (Note 3) This patent is identical to the previously announced patent for transition finance.
(Note 4) Standard values calculated by the Company. The figures may vary depending on the setting of various conditions. Life cycle costs including manufacturing and disposal are not taken into account.
(Note 5) However, this does not apply to cases such as when electricity is traded relative to a specific power plant.
